So is it "Smoky" or "Smokey" ?You'll see it spelled both ways. The dictionary says "Smoky" and that's how Great Smoky Mountains National Park spells it. So that's the spelling we use. But locally you'll often see it spelled "Smokey," and that spelling has come to be associated with our region specifically.
The term "Old Smokey" derives from the American folk song "On Top of Old Smokey," where the hero/heroine (depending on what version you hear) "lost my true lover for courtin' too slow." And depending on the version, you may see the song title spelled "Smoky."
